MIAMI, FL — The Alan Stalcup Scholarship continues its mission of investing in students who are driven to develop their talents, pursue meaningful careers, and make a lasting impact through education. The program’s newest recipient, Leah Rutherford, is approaching her junior year at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where she is pursuing a degree in Jazz Vocal Performance.

For Leah, music has never simply been an interest or hobby — it has always been the path she envisioned for her future.

Growing up in a musical family and later attending an arts-focused high school gave Leah the opportunity to develop her abilities from an early age. Those experiences helped transform a lifelong passion for music into a professional and educational pursuit.

Today, Leah is already putting that passion into practice. In addition to her studies, she performs professionally throughout Miami and teaches music, gaining firsthand experience both as an artist and an educator.

As she approaches her junior year, Leah is focused on taking the next step in developing her own artistic identity. One of her goals is to begin professionally recording her original arrangements and compositions, with hopes of releasing her own music within the next several years.

Her ambitions, however, extend beyond performance.

Leah wants to better understand the business side of the music industry, giving her the knowledge to expand her professional opportunities and build a sustainable career around her artistry. At the same time, she continues to develop her vocal technique and deepen her understanding of the voice through instruction from university vocal professors across multiple styles of music.

Teaching is also an important part of Leah’s future. Her experience as a music educator has inspired her to consider opportunities to teach at the higher-education level, allowing her to eventually invest in future musicians in the same way her own educators have invested in her.

With support from the Alan Stalcup Scholarship, Leah can continue developing as a performer, composer, educator, and future music professional while taking advantage of the opportunities available to her at the Frost School of Music.

For Leah, that support carries a meaning that extends beyond its financial value.

“I do not take lightly the trust that scholarship support represents,” Leah shared. “I believe deeply that funding art education is important in raising the next generation of artists, and I recognize that I wouldn’t be anywhere where I am now without that investment from my educators and peers, both financially and personally.”

Her perspective reflects an important part of the Alan Stalcup Scholarship’s mission: recognizing that an investment in education can extend far beyond a single student. When talented individuals are given opportunities to develop their abilities, they can go on to teach, create, perform, lead, and inspire others.

The Alan Stalcup Scholarship was created to remove barriers for hardworking students and open doors to opportunity through education. Its recipients represent a wide range of disciplines and ambitions, united by a commitment to developing their talents and using them to build meaningful futures.

Supporting students like Leah also recognizes the importance of investing in the arts and in the individuals who will shape their future. As both a professional performer and educator, Leah is already contributing to Miami’s music community while continuing to develop her own voice as an artist.

As Leah approaches her junior year at the University of Miami, she is building more than a degree. She is developing the artistic, technical, educational, and business foundation needed to transform a lifelong passion for music into a lasting career — while preparing to invest in the next generation of musicians along the way.

Applications for the Alan Stalcup Scholarship remain open to students pursuing higher education.
