There’s an old African proverb: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

You don’t truly understand a team until its stress tested. Adversity either bonds or breaks you. When the stakes are high, your team is everything.

That’s why the people you choose to invest with, work with, or hire matter. Make sure they’re the ones you want in the foxhole with you.

If you’re going to invest your time, talent, or resources with someone, sit across the table with them. Have lunch. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do business. Weaknesses can be hidden during the good times. But, when challenges hit, the cracks show.

The best teams are tested before the fight. Marines fire their guns thousands of times before combat. Leaders, investors, and operators can do the same: drill, stress-test, and prepare.

When things go wrong, and they will, you want people you can rely on. People who show up. People you trust. People who will fight through the hard moments with you.

I will always be grateful for my team in this past season.
